The River Hydra 460 has been voted the Readers’ Choice at Årets Båt 2026, Norway’s Boat of the Year awards. The winners were announced on the opening evening of the Båter i Sjøen boat show at Aker Brygge in Oslo, in front of a crowd of Norwegian boaters, dealers and industry figures.
For anyone following the boat internationally: this is the ROTO Nautica Hydra 460, sold in Norway as the River Hydra 460 by our partners there. Same hull, same build, same boat – different badge for the market.
This one is special. The Readers’ Award is decided by the people who actually buy, run and live with boats – Båtmagasinet’s readers, voting online across a field of nominated newcomers. No jury deliberation, no scoring matrix. Just boaters picking the boat they’d want.
They picked the River Hydra 460.
What the Årets Båt 2026 award means
Årets Båt is run by Båtmagasinet, Norway’s biggest boating title, with a jury that includes Stig Hvide Smith of the Royal Norwegian Boating Association, Janne Odaker of the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue, and Båtmagasinet’s editor-in-chief Ole Henrik Nissen-Lie. Alongside the jury classes for Motorboat of the Year and Day Cruiser of the Year, readers cast their own vote.
Norway is not an easy crowd. It’s a country with one of the highest rates of boat ownership in the world, a coastline that punishes anything badly built, and buyers who have been comparing hulls at the dock since they were children. Winning a popular vote there says something that a spec sheet can’t.
Why the readers went for River Hydra 460
Båtmagasinet described the River Hydra 460 as a compact, light and versatile family boat, with room for up to five people, stable, easy to drive, and happy on an outboard of up to 60 HP.
That last part matters more than it sounds. At 450 cm long, 180 cm wide and around 320 kg, the hull simply doesn’t need much power to get moving. Smaller engine, less fuel, lower running costs, and none of the anxiety that comes with a first boat that demands a big motor to feel alive.
The Hydra 460 is built from multi-layer rotomoulded polyethylene rather than fibreglass, and the practical consequences show up on every trip:
- It shrugs off knocks that crack fibreglass. Bump a dock, beach it on pebbles, nudge a rock – the hull flexes instead of shattering.
- There’s no gelcoat to wax, polish or worry about. Rinse the salt off, check your fittings, and you’re ready to launch again.
- It does more than one job. The same hull takes the family out for a swim and a picnic, heads off for a morning’s fishing, or cruises the coast for the day. Professionals use the platform as a workboat, too.
A first boat shouldn’t be a gamble. Polyethylene takes a lot of the gamble out of it.
Behind the River Hydra 460
The boat is built by ROTO Nautica, the Slovenian boatbuilder behind a range of polyethylene boats from 4.5 to 9.5 metres, and reaches Norwegian buyers as the River Hydra 460 through our partners there. It made its world debut as the Hydra 460 at boot Düsseldorf in January 2026 and was designed entirely in-house as the next step in the Hydra range – refined hull lines, a reworked deck layout with better weight distribution, a wide helm seat for two with a flip-up backrest, and dedicated stowage for anchor, fenders and ropes.

Tough, low-maintenance, easy to run, cheap to feed, and backed by support close to home. It turns out that’s what boaters vote for.
